Elements to consider when choosing the location for your brand photos

As a nature-inspired photographer, many of my clients reach out because they too find themselves deeply connected to nature. Something about it makes them feel alive. It makes them feel grounded. When it comes to choosing a location for your brand photos, there’s definitely a couple things to consider.

What are the intentions behind these photos?

Before working with any of my clients, I always like to set up a complimentary discovery call. Here we will discuss what you desire when it comes to your brand photos as well as any other details that may be needed. What is your brand? What emotions are you trying to convey through these photographs? Where will you be sharing them?

What photography approach do you gravitate towards?

Are you looking for a clean and crisp feel? Are you drawn to warm and grainy? Do you value traditional branding photos or artistic freedom? Could you see yourself incorporating material elements into your photographs (i.e., the tools and resources that allow you to pursue your work – in other words, props).

What location should you choose?

After you’ve established your intentions and desires for this shoot, now it’s time to choose a location. The most important element when choosing a location for your brand photos, is to choose a place that you feel comfortable in – that feels aligned with your vision.

This could be your home studio, a studio rental, or out in nature such as a forest, field, beach etc.

Whichever one you decide, know that each option has its magic.

Home Studio

If you’re an artist, creative, or business owner, you may want your brand photos done in your home studio or in your brick and mortar shop if you have one. This way, you could showcase the authentic details of your work (photos of you engaging in what you love, your products, your artwork itself etc.) Your home studio is also easily accessible and can be used at whatever time you prefer – you don’t need to book a time slot. However, if your home studio isn’t necessarily the aesthetic for what you’re going for in terms of decor, lighting, and overall feel, then you may consider a studio rental.

Studio Rental

Many business owners end up renting a studio space for their brand photos. The wonderful thing about studio spaces is that there are so many to choose from each with their own uniqueness and oftentimes, beautiful aesthetic and decor.

If this feels more aligned with what you want, you’ll just need to consider the time and date for the shoot. Keep in mind that this option may be less flexible than your home studio or out in nature in terms of cancellations and reschedules. Some studios allow you to book by the hour where some others have a 2-hour minimum. Many studios will also require a deposit to secure your spot and may ask you to pay in full prior to the date itself. In cases of unforeseen events, this may be a little concerning in terms of the investment aspect.

Nature

Depending on the ‘nature’ of your brand and business, it may not always make the most sense to have your photos taken outdoors. But if you’re in the creative, wellness, or adventure industry (or if you simply love nature and that alone is part of your brand), then choosing a natural landscape as your studio is a lovely decision. Whether you’re searching for stone, sand, water, grass, forest, or field elements, there is always so much variety found in nature, and most of the time, it’s completely free.

A couple things to consider if you do decide to have your photos taken outdoors is the weather and the time of day – many photographers would suggest early morning (sunrise), or late evening sunset) for optimal lighting purposes.

As we all know, the weather can be quite unpredictable and this is something you have to accept if you decide to have your photos taken in nature. When working with photographers, some will offer a backup rain date, while many others won’t simply because if they did, they would be having to reschedule/cancel so many of their sessions!

Something else you might want to consider is how comfortable you are taking photographs when there are other people around. If you choose a public location, there’s always that possibility.

Choosing to have your brand photos taken outside means accepting the situation as is – you may be graced with golden-hour kisses, or you might not; you may be embraced by the warmth of the sun, or you might not. You may have the whole area to yourself, or you may be sharing it with multiple humans. Nature sessions are truly unpredictable, but in the end, they always provide you with a meaningful experience that allows you to be completely present.

My Approach to Brand Photography

My approach to brand and lifestyle photography focuses on capturing you and your brand at its roots. Whether it's documenting you in your element, your brand's unique characteristics, retreat photography, stock imagery that complements your current business, or anything in between, I'm an observer – a photojournalist rather than just a photographer. I document what I see, interpret your energy, and capture those emotions within the environment. Perceiving a moment and preserving a memory.

Let’s Work Together

For those who value a documentary approach, a humble and simplistic feel, as well as purposefully captured photographs that evoke inspiration amongst both you and your clients, then I’d love to help make your vision come to life whether it’s joining you in your home studio, exploring a rental studio, or experiencing the beauty of nature!
